Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has called the private parking industry “out of control” following news that tickets were issued every six seconds in the UK last year.
The RAC Foundation says the number of tickets rose by almost a fifth in a year and was far above levels a decade ago.
The motoring research group said the number of tickets issued in the 2017-18 financial year rose from 4.71m - a year-on-year increase of nearly 20%. A decade ago 499,000 tickets were issued.
ParkingEye dished out an incredible 1.76 million tickets last year.
Murdo is currently introducing a bill at Holyrood which will make it easier to challenge tickets from rogue operators.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said;
“These figures are shocking and would appear to show that the private parking industry is completely out of control and in need of greater regulation.
“Parkers are being intimidated into paying rip-off charges that are completely out of step with losses that companies claim to have incurred.
“Ultimately, we need regulation that makes it easier to challenge these tickets, caps fines and makes the terms and conditions clear and I look forward to introducing a draft bill before parliamentary recess this summer.
“It’s high time the cowboys were reigned in as the number of tickets being distributed is soaring despite driver behaviour remaining the same.”
