Murdo backs Aldi’s festive food giveaway

November 13, 2018

Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has welcomed an initiative from Aldi to donate fresh food to local charities over the Christmas period and has encouraged other supermarkets to follow suit.

There are two Aldi stores in Perth and Kinross, both in Perth, and they will close at 6pm on Christmas Eve until Thursday the 27th December. During this period they will donate unsold fresh food to good causes and each store will select one charity from their local area to support.

Interested parties should contact Christmas@aldi.co.uk before Sunday 18th November.

Aldi estimates that around 20-30 crates of leftover food will be given away at  each store. Last year, Aldi donated 500,000 meals from over 300 participating stores nationwide.

Murdo Fraser MSP said:

“This is a fantastic initiative and one that can go a long way to helping solve food poverty in the region over the festive period.

“Every year, supermarkets waste millions of pounds worth of food and finding a way to avert this should be a priority for everyone involved in the industry.

“There are a number of charities in the Perth and Kinross area that could benefit from this donation and I would encourage them to submit an application.

“I also hope other supermarkets follow Aldi’s lead and support projects to  prevent food waste whilst helping good causes at the same time.”
