Scottish Conservative politician Murdo Fraser highlights of impact of Tay Cities Region Deal on Pert

Mid Scotland and Fife Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser has highlighted the impact of the Tay Cities Deal on Perth and Kinross.

Speaking at a debate on Scotland’s Future Economy at Holyrood today (Wednesday), Murdo praised the UK Government’s industrial strategy, and stressed the benefits of this initiative has been seen in the City Deals projects. He stressed the positive boost this has given to the Perth and Kinross area.

The aim of the Government’s UK Industrial Strategy is to boost productivity by backing businesses to create good jobs and increase the earning power of people throughout the UK with investment in skills, industries and infrastructure.

Murdo said: “The industrial strategy is a substantial investment from the UK Government promoting innovative ideas, great people, major infrastructure upgrades, the best business environment, and prosperous communities across the UK.

“We see evidence of this in the City Deals projects being promoted across the country. In the area I represent, the UK Government’s contribution to the Tay Cities Region Deal has been supporting innovation with £20 million going to the International Barley Hub and £25 million to the Advance Plant Growth Centre in the James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie, along with £10 million for the Perth City Transformation Project.

“This funding will go towards the refurbishment of the Perth City Hall, and the City Deals project will also see up to £5.2 million provided for advanced plastic reprocessing in the area, amongst other projects.

“This is a practical example of how the UK industrial strategy is working to improve the economic environment throughout our country.

“It is not for government to direct the economy. But what government can do, very successfully, is support innovation, encourage enterprise, and provide a general environment where businesses can grow.”
