Concerns raised over broadband speed in Perth and Kinross

January 22, 2019

Concerns have been raised by Scottish Conservative politicians over Perth and Kinross falling behind other areas in terms of poor broadband speed.

Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith, MSPs for the Mid Scotland and Fife region, are both alarmed at the findings of a study of broadband speed in local authority areas across Scotland carried out by consumer group Which?

This study found that Perth and Kinross had an average broadband speed of 10.1 megabits per second (Mbps) – slower than Na h-Eilean Siar in the Outer Hebrides. Perth and Kinross was also well behind Dundee City, which had one of the fastest average broadband speeds recorded in Scotland – 23.1Mbps.

The analysis found that West Dunbartonshire had the fastest broadband speed in Scotland, with an average of 29.6Mbps.

Mr Fraser has underlined that broadband is an important issue in Perth and Kinross and expressed his disappointment at the findings by Which?

“The average broadband speed for Perth and Kinross is very disappointing and shows the region is lagging behind other local authority areas in Scotland,” he said.

“We are aware that poor broadband service is an issue for many parts of Perth and Kinross - especially in rural areas. It’s a concern that many residents have raised with us over the last couple of years.

“It’s high time the Scottish Government addressed poor broadband speed.”

And Ms Smith added: “The Scottish Government has stated that the whole of Scotland will have access to superfast broadband, which is speeds faster than 30Mbps, by 2021. This, after all, is their own stated ‘R100’ commitment (i.e. reaching 100% cover).”

“However, these figures make a mockery of this commitment and once again shows how many residents in Perth and Kinross are having to suffer very slow broadband speeds. It’s not good enough and needs addressed.”
