Murdo Fraser MSP calls on SNP Government funding for tourism and wedding sectors to be handed over
Murdo Fraser MSP has said he wants funding allocated to tourism and wedding sectors handed over “without delay” to enable them to cope with the economic consequences of Covid restrictions.
The Scottish Conservative politician was reacting to the announcement of Scottish Government funding made earlier this week – consequential to support generated by the UK Government - that will see a funding package of over £60 million provided to the tourism sector and £15 million to the wedding sector to tackle the economic impact of the pandemic.
Commenting, Mr Fraser, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, said: “I welcome the money announced today for tourism and wedding sectors, which is something the Scottish Conservatives have consistently called for. These particular sectors, which play a vital role in the economy of Mid Scotland and Fife, have been hit very badly by the Covid restrictions and have been asking for financial help for some time – it is a great relief to know that they will get some funding at last.
“Many of these businesses either had to close on a temporary basis or have been operating on a very restricted basis due to the tight Covid guidelines imposed by the Scottish Government. I have been contacted by several business owners in the tourism and wedding sectors who feared for their future due to a lack of income.”
He continued: “What we have to remember however, is that this funding is of course UK Treasury money funnelled through the Scottish Government accounts. What’s important is that they start paying it out to needy businesses and individuals as soon as possible and not into next year – it needs to be handed over without delay.
“These businesses are crying out for financial help so now is the time to give them that.”
